Currency Spain
In Madrid the currency is euro like in most other member states of the European Union. Everywhere in the city you will find ATM machines where you can get money with your international bank card. The best place to change money or travelers cheques is at the airport. But also in the city centre you can find lots of banks. At hotels, restaurants and the bigger shops you can also pay with credit cards like MasterCard, Visa and Diners Club.

The standard time zone in Madrid is UTC/GMT + 1 hour. But during the Central European Summer Time the time zone is UTC/GMT +2 hours.

Spain has many national holidays. You have to be aware that on these days most of the shops are closed. Monuments and museums still can be visited, but the opening hours will be limited.

Opening hours in Madrid
Most shops in Madrid are open between 09:30 and 13:30. They close during lunch time and the siesta. In the afternoon the shops are open between 17:00 and 20:00. On Saturdays most shops are open in the morning, only some warehouses, some shopping centers and big supermarkets will be open all day. On Sunday everything is closed. Only in the month December the shops are open on Sundays too.
