Getting around Venice
What makes Venice very unique is the fact that cars are banned from the city centre. On what other citybreak destination can you find that? It´s simply impossible for cars to cross the city centre. Even motorcycles or mopeds are forbidden. Venice is built on 117 islands, which are connected to each other by many bridges. So there are not so many means of transportation on dry land. You will have to walk or other wiseuse one of the means of water transport.
Vaporetto Venice
The vaporetto water buses are the most common means of transportation in Venice. You can choose between inside and outside seats. It’s a nice way to explore Venice from the water. There are various routes through the city. Route 1 leads through the Grand Canal and has a lot of stops. Route 2 also runs through the Grand Canal, but has fewer stops. Would you like to visit the cemetery Island San Michele or the Island Murano, famous for its glassmaking, than you can take the waterbuses 41 and 42. Also at night there is a water bus, indicated with the letter N. The water buses are a nice and efficient way of transportation. You can buy tickets at kiosks, tobacco stores or at the desks near the bus stops. If you want to use the water buses a lot during your citybreak Venice, you can buy tickets that are valid for one or more days.
Gondolas Venice
The gondolas are very nice and romantic, but maybe not the best means of transportation because of the high costs. If you are willing to pay a lot, it can be a great experience as a tourist attraction.
On foot in Venice
The best way to discover Venice is on foot. The city is very well accessible on foot. But don´t forget to buy a city map. It’s easy to get lost in the labyrinth of small streets.
